Queenstown, from the stunning views, with native forest and high mountain peaks surrounding the city which is located on the edge of Lake Wakatipu, to the variety of activities on offer, is truly unique.

First settled in 1860, "Queenstown" was given its name as the magnificent area was thought to be 'fit for a queen'.

For thrill-seekers Queenstown has it all, known as "Adventure Capital of the World" and home to the bungy jump. Jet boating, helicopter flightseeing adventures, adventure combination packages, parapenting, mountain biking, horse riding, skiing, white water rafting, bungy jumping, and parachuting are all popular activities, and all able to be experienced in this beautiful city.

Leisurely favourites include the historic TSS Earnslaw steamship, Walter Peak Station, and the Skyline Gondola ride. This area is also home to many world class wineries where you can go wine tasting. Take in Queenstown's peace and beauty on it's many walks, or an excursion to Glenorchy and Skippers Canyon.

Queenstown's distinct atmosphere and flavour is reflected in the vibrant downtown city centre. Queenstown is suited to strolling, take a relaxed walk through the narrow streets, or to the compact town centre of shops, boutiques, courtyards, restaurants and century old buildings of timber and stone. Queenstown also houses a kiwi and birdlife park, 'bottle house' made from old bottles, and a motor museum displaying old cars back to 1861.

Like many other towns in this part of the South Island, Queenstown was originally a goldmining centre. Gold was discovered on the Shotover River in 1862, and it became the second richest gold-bearing river in the world. Makeshift towns appeared almost overnight, not only in Queenstown, but also in other areas. Most noteworthy is Arrowtown, 21 kilometres to the north east beside the Arrow River. Arrowtown retains its old world charm today; many of the original stone and wooden buildings still stand, now home to shops, restaurants and cafes.
